Castanospermum australe or 'Black Bean Tree'

Native to rainforest areas from norther NSw to Cape York Castanosper mum australe or 'Black Bean' is a large tree to 40m in its native habitat. Much smaller in cooler climates and in cultivation. Full sun and a humus rich well drained soil.

The root system of Castanospermum australe or 'Black Bean' is extensive so Castanospermum australe or 'Black Bean' is not suitable for planting in all areas (keep away from drains, buildings etc).

A lovely shade tree in a parkland situation. Castanospermum australe or 'Black Bean' is also used for bonsai where it is often grown from seed.
