Leighton Green Cypress - Cupressus leylandii

One of the most popular wholesale larger hedge plants is the Leighton Green Cypress. A larger growing hedge to small tree Cypress leylandii will reach around 15 with a conical shape if not pruned. More often used as a lower growing hedge, pruned formally to 3- 4 m.

Regarded as one of the fastest growing conifers, the full name is Cupressocyaris Leylandii 'Leightons Green'. W ith thick dense foliage and fast growing this makes an excellent screening plant. Also used in rural situations as a wind break and shelter for stock.

Plants are sold potted from tube stock through to advanced specimens all year round but best planted in early autumn unless water is available through the first summer. A shallow fibrous root system should be planted away from pipes and drainage lines.

Planting Distance

For a dense screen plant Cypress 'Leightons Green' at around 1.5 - 2 m apart. Remember to give the tree room between it and any fence, building or driveway.

Care

Water in well when planting and water through the first two months depending on rainfall. If the firat summer is dry contimue with water. Best in a position where it recieves adequate light, 5 - 6 hours a day. A slow release general purpose fertilizer applied in spring is usually adequate.

Pruning

For a formal hedge prune 3 - 4 times a year. Early spring, early summer and early autumn.

How hard cn you prune then ?
Because of the dormant buds that respond to pruning well the Leighton Green Cypress can be kept to a width or around 1.5m with regular pruning
