Ginkgo Biloba or 'Ginkgo Tree' (maidenhair tree) is an outstanding specimen tree with attractive green foliage that turns a buttery yellow in autumn. Here in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges we have been growing Ginkgo trees for nearly 25 years at two seperate properties, they have coped with no extra water even during the long drought period, we believe they are are a hardy tree.
Given room these trees will send up a central leader and form a nice pyramidical shape with layered open branches, the leaves are reminiscent of a maidenhair fern, although a lot larger, hence the name 'maidenhair fern tree'. These are an ancient tree often found near temples in China and Japan, and yes they are the source of 'Ginkgo Nuts'
Give your Ginkgo a good start, dig some well rotted compost into the planting hole 2-3 weeks before planting for best results.
Ginkgo Biloba are a hardy tree once established and require little extra care, any dead wood can be removed, pruning is generally not required as it holds its shape well.
